HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PLAN A WEDDING IN THE UK?

WHEN TO PLAN YOUR WEDDING, AND HOW LONG IT MIGHT TAKE

You are engaged – congratulations! Whether you have been dreaming of this day since you were little or the idea of planning a wedding feels completely overwhelming you are not alone. Every couple’s approach to wedding planning is different and the timeline that works for one may not be right for another.

This post is here to offer guidance, not rigid rules, so you can start thinking about when to plan your wedding and how long it might take.

START BY ENJOYING YOUR ENGAGEMENT

Before diving headfirst into Pinterest boards and venue viewings we always encourage couples to take a moment to pause and celebrate. Soak up this exciting new chapter, maybe plan an engagement party and enjoy the feeling of saying “fiancé” for the first time. There is no rush! Weddings are about joy and the planning process should be too.

SO… WHEN SHOULD YOU START PLANNING?

The answer is simple: it depends on you.
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, and while some couples thrive on a long engagement with plenty of time to plan, others are ready to tie the knot within a few short months.

Here at Natalie Hewitt Events, most of our couples begin planning between 12–18 months before their wedding date. But we’ve also planned spectacular, multi-day weddings in just 3 months. The most important factor is finding a timeline that suits your lifestyle, availability, and vision.

DOES A BIGGER WEDDING TAKE LONGER TO PLAN?

Not necessarily. A small guest list does not always mean a simpler planning process. Intimate weddings can be just as detail rich as larger ones, sometimes even more so. The level of design, logistics and supplier coordination remains just as important when you are crafting a bespoke high end experience.

It is not about how big the wedding is. It is about how many moving parts there are, the number of events, the logistics involved, the venue type (for example private marquees often require more planning than a hotel) and your own availability for decision making.

WHAT AFFECTS THE PLANNING TIMELINE?

Here are a few things to consider when thinking about how long you will need:

  • Your ideal season and date: Are you set on a summer wedding? Want to get married over a bank holiday weekend? These dates get booked quickly so the earlier you start the better.
  • Your chosen venue or marquee: Some venues book two years in advance. Others especially private estates or marquee locations offer more flexibility.
  • Your supplier team: The top photographers, caterers, florists and entertainment specialists often work with a limited number of clients each year. Booking early gives you the best chance of securing your dream team.
  • Your own schedules: If you both work full time, travel often or have children allow yourself more time. Planning a wedding is exciting but it is also a project that deserves space and attention.
  • Where you live: If you are planning a UK wedding from abroad as many of our international clients do you may want to allow a little more time for visits, tastings and time zone coordination, though we will always work around your schedule.

THE BENEFITS OF PLANNING IN 12–18 MONTHS

For most couples, a 12 to 18-month timeline offers the perfect balance. It gives you time to make thoughtful decisions, secure your favourite suppliers, and enjoy the process without feeling rushed.

It also gives your guests, especially those travelling from overseas, plenty of notice to plan travel and accommodation making the overall experience more enjoyable for everyone.

CAN YOU PLAN A WEDDING IN LESS THAN A YEAR?

Absolutely. We have planned exquisite weddings in just three months. With a dedicated planner, streamlined decisions and a clear vision, short turnaround weddings can be just as extraordinary as those with longer timelines. It simply means a more decisive, focused planning process and we will guide you every step of the way.

THERE’S NO PERFECT ANSWER — ONLY WHAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU

Ultimately, the question of how long it takes to plan a wedding comes down to your own preferences, priorities and plans. Some couples start planning within weeks of getting engaged. Others enjoy a long engagement and take their time. And some get in touch six months before their wedding day and we make it happen beautifully.

Our advice? Do not worry about what everyone else is doing. We will build a timeline that works for you.

NATALIE’S NOTE

We receive most of our wedding enquiries just after the summer, often once couples have attended friends’ weddings and are ready to focus on their own, or in the new year when the idea of a fresh start inspires big plans.

So if you have just got engaged, enjoy it, and then, when you are ready, we will be here to help.
