WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A BRIDESMAID?

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SUPPORTING THE BRIDE ON HER WEDDING DAY

Being asked to be part of a wedding is a huge honour, and for bridesmaids it also comes with some thoughtful responsibilities. If you have never been a bridesmaid before, or even if you have, it is not always clear what is expected of you. From where to be and when, to how you can be genuinely helpful, here is our guide to supporting the bride and making the most of your role.

BEFORE THE BIG DAY

WEDDING DRESS SHOPPING

You may be invited to join the bride for her wedding dress appointment, a truly special experience. Your role here is to support her. Be punctual, be present and let her take the lead. Listen to what she wants before offering opinions, and focus on helping her feel confident and excited.

BRIDESMAID DRESS SHOPPING

Traditionally, the Maid of Honour will take the lead on bridesmaid dress shopping. It’s important to discuss style, colour, and budget with the bride in advance. Whether the experience is a relaxed browse or a full-blown try-on session, keep the bride’s preferences front and centre.

WEDDING ADMIN (WEDMIN!)

If the bride asks for help, be it researching options, writing place cards or crafting table plans, say yes if you can. Offer gentle advice, not strong opinions. Every couple’s vision is different, and your support should be led by what matters most to them.

THE HEN DO

This is your time to celebrate! The Maid of Honour usually organises the hen party, but nowadays it’s often a group effort. Whether it’s a relaxing weekend or a lively few days abroad, remember it’s about creating meaningful memories with the bride.

THE REHEARSAL

This may be the first time the whole wedding party gets together, and excitement is high! But it is important to be punctual and pay attention during the ceremony rehearsal, particularly if it is a religious service. Listen carefully, learn your cue, and you will be off to the pub before you know it.

WEDDING DAY MORNING

GETTING READY

Be ready on time so you can assist the bride, help the florist, calm nerves, or track down missing shoes. Pack a playlist (relaxed or upbeat, depending on the vibe), ensure there’s food and drink on hand, and help keep the morning running smoothly. The Maid of Honour will look after the bride, but every bridesmaid has a role to play in setting the tone for a calm, happy start.

EMERGENCY KIT

Bring a few helpful extras: hair grips, lipstick, tissues, safety pins, perfume, setting spray, a compact mirror, stain remover pen, and a snack or two. You’ll be glad you did!

THE CEREMONY

ARRIVAL

Bridesmaids should aim to arrive at the ceremony 10 minutes before the bride. You’ll help her with her dress, check her veil, and share a few kind words before she walks down the aisle.

WALKING DOWN THE AISLE

Traditionally, in the UK, the bride walks down the aisle first with her father, followed by her bridesmaids. Increasingly, couples are adopting the American style, with the wedding party entering first and the bride last. This will likely be covered at the rehearsal, so make sure you understand the couple’s chosen format.

DURING THE DAY

PHOTOGRAPHS

Assist with group photos by gathering guests and keeping things running smoothly. You might also be asked to help during the couple’s portraits, holding a bouquet, fixing the bride’s dress or helping to make them laugh.

SPEECHES OR READINGS

You may be asked to give a toast, do a reading during the ceremony, or simply look after a key guest. If you’re unsure about anything, ask the planner or Maid of Honour for guidance.

SET-UP & SUPPORT

You might not be needed for set-up, but being nearby is always appreciated. You could help hang the bride’s dress, make tea, assist the florist, or take on last-minute tasks. Every little helps.

THROUGHOUT THE EVENING

HELPING GUESTS

You will likely be approached by guests asking where the bar or loos are, so be prepared to help direct them. Keep an eye on elderly or less mobile guests who might need assistance moving between spaces.

KEEPING THE COUPLE STRESS-FREE

If you spot a small issue, don’t go straight to the bride. Check in with the Maid of Honour, planner, or family members. Your job is to help protect the couple’s calm and joy throughout the day.

DANCE FLOOR DUTY

Couples always fear an empty dancefloor, so be the first to jump in! Lead by example, pull a few guests up with you and help set the tone for a fabulous evening.

In short: Being a bridesmaid is about showing up with love, support and good energy. Be present, be kind and enjoy every moment of this once in a lifetime experience.
